Hall-Kamishibai: readings and initiation
The Musée des Contes et Récits (Museum of Tales and Stories) invites you to discover and learn about the art of kamishibai, which contributed to the development of Japanese animation!
Kamishibai, a word composed of “kami” (paper) and “shibai” (theater), combines illustration and narration. It appeared in Japan nearly a century ago, in the late 1920s. Street vendors crisscrossed Japanese cities on their bicycles and stopped at street corners. On the luggage rack of their bikes, on top of a large box, was a wooden frame in which they displayed a series of illustrated boards while telling stories.
It was a real communication phenomenon. Just imagine: nearly a million children crowded around street corners in Tokyo alone, and just as many in other Japanese cities, to listen to episodes of their favorite stories in pictures!
At the 17th edition of Japan Impact, the Museum of Tales and Stories invites you to learn how to read a selection of kamishibai brought back from Japan: tales, legends, and other fictional stories on the theme of animals.
Suitable for all ages from 6 months!
Everyone is welcome to come and learn about this art form! 🎭
